CPTE exam day: room, device and network requirements

The CPTE is delivered virtually and recorded from check-in to finish. CAPR's rule is blunt: if your room, device or connection doesn't meet the requirements on the day, you don't sit the exam and you forfeit the $2,500. Here is what has to be true, and when to check it.

Updated September 2026 from CAPR's Testing Setup Requirements for Candidates (May 2026). Read the current version on alliancept.org and watch CAPR's exam-day flow video before your sitting.

No later than 48 hours beforeComplete the System Check from the exam device, in the exam room. Problems go to exams@alliancept.org
The day beforeSet up the room. Repeat the Chime check
Exam dayRepeat the Chime check, then open the link in your Appointment Confirmation. Oral section first (2.5 h, no breaks), about an hour off the clock, then the written section (2.5 h, no breaks). Arriving more than 15 minutes late, or finishing the oral and not starting the written on time, forfeits the fee

Rehearse the day, not just the content

Sit at least one full mock in the exam room, on the exam device, in exam order: oral cases for 2.5 hours, an hour's break, then a 100-question paper. Nothing else tells you whether your chair, your lighting, your bladder and your concentration survive five hours.

Common questions

Can I take the CPTE on a Mac?

Yes — macOS 10.13 or later, with screen recording enabled for Chrome at the system level. Chrome is the only supported browser on any system.

Do I need a second device?

For the written section, yes: a smartphone or tablet running the ProctorExam app as a second camera, on Wi-Fi, plugged in, silent, airplane mode, auto-lock off, landscape. A second laptop is not accepted. The oral section uses the testing device only.

Can I use headphones?

No. Wired and wireless headphones and earbuds are prohibited; use the device's speakers and microphone.

What ID is accepted?

Only three: a Canadian driver's licence, a Canadian permanent resident card, or a passport. The name must match your CAPR profile exactly.

What if I can't get a private room at home?

CAPR allows any private indoor space that meets the requirements — a room at work, a hotel room, a library room, university space. Open-plan rooms need temporary dividers; windows onto other people must be covered.

What happens if my setup fails the check-in?

You are not allowed to proceed, and CAPR states you forfeit the entire fee. That's why the system check a week before, and the readiness checks in the days before, matter.
