The APC pathway for overseas physiotherapists (APEP), stage by stage

Since October 2025 overseas-qualified physiotherapists reach Australian registration through the Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway. Here is each stage in order, what it assesses, and where candidates lose time.

Updated October 2026 from the Australian Physiotherapy Council's APEP pages. Stages, fees and dates are the Council's to change; confirm on physiocouncil.com.au and, for registration standards, with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia.

Eligibility Assessment

The Council checks that your qualification and documents meet the requirements to enter the pathway. Official documents from your university take longest here; request them the day you decide.

Cultural Safety Training

A required course on culturally safe practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It must be completed before you can apply for the Written Assessment, and its content appears inside clinical questions afterwards.

Written Assessment

Two 2-hour papers on one day, 15 cases and 60 questions each, scaled score of 500 to pass. Remote or in Melbourne and Sydney, four times a year. Most candidates' rate-limiting step. Format and scoring in detail →

Capability Assessment

A remote oral examination by video call: clinical reasoning and communication in simulated patient contexts, assessed against the Practice Thresholds. Speaking practice under time, with feedback, is the preparation.

Clinical Workshop

The final Council stage before registration, demonstrating safe and effective practice. Details and scheduling are on the Council's APEP pages.

Registration with Ahpra

With the Council's assessment complete, you apply to the Physiotherapy Board of Australia for general registration, meeting its English-language, criminal-history and other standards, and paying registration fees.

Common questions

What is APEP?

The Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway — the Council's assessment route for overseas-qualified physiotherapists, which replaced the Standard Assessment Pathway in October 2025. Its stages run from an eligibility assessment through written and oral assessments to a clinical workshop, then registration with Ahpra.

Can I sit the Written Assessment from outside Australia?

Yes — the Written Assessment is offered remotely with online supervision as well as in Melbourne and Sydney, and the Capability Assessment is a remote oral exam by video call.

Do I need an English test?

English language proficiency is a registration requirement set by the Physiotherapy Board of Australia (Ahpra), with accepted tests and scores published by the Board; check the current standard rather than a prep site.

How much does the pathway cost?

Each stage has its own Council fee, plus Ahpra registration fees once you pass. Fees change; take them from the Council's fee page at the time you apply. Prep providers quote totals in the several-thousand-Australian-dollar range for the full pathway.
